Cryptid Redesign ( Chupa-Cabras)
Following
the post in where I explain what I found on it, I started to work on a different
concept. One that reminded me more of mythology. I had the idea that it would
be interesting to see something which would resemble a goat in any way and that
the reason why it was so elusive its because it could somehow hide in plain
sight by disguising as one of the goats. After some sketches I could not come
up with a rendition that I like. So, I started to think of other concepts,
maybe, it could be this mysterious force that would reap the life to give life,
to make sure that natural balance was in place. Something that could appear at
night, suck the life force, and distribute it to the surroundings. However, it
is hard to draw a “mysterious force”, so I imagined a black shadowy figure.
Luckily while I was searching for inspiration, I found an imagine that I could not
trace to anyone, not the artist, not the festival activity, nothing!
And this was without a doubt my biggest reference on how to approach this mysterious
cryptid.

I loved this idea and knew i had to use it. In the end i changed it very little. I used a goats skull instead of what looks like a horse skull, i kept the flowers of the forehead and kept this long drape that in my depiction would be the layer of grass itself that would rise from the ground.
In these first drafts i kept it very simple. Just to see if i could associate it as the cryptid itself.
I used a sketchy brush tool to quickly put my ideas in "paper".
With the idea taking shape i started refining some of the elements and confirming the shapes i was going with. However there were still things to work on.
When i was happy with how it looked i started caring about lineart. I knew i wanted to go with this "comic book" style. Heavily inspired in western comic books and more specifically in the work of the artist Mike Mignola. At this point i was happy with the result so i proceeded.
I kept adding to it, and one thing in particular, the "spikes" that were always associated with the cryptid.
I thought that these spiky shapes could be the way that the cryptid uses to move around in my design. Like spiky legs similar to a spider and skinny arms with pointy fingers.
This was the final result. Added colour, context and other details. I liked how the final piece turned out, i would have loved to have more time to refine it however it is not possible as i have other cryptids to attend to.
