Cryptid Redesign ( Gambuzino)

  Cryptid Redesign ( Gambuzino)

With the little information I had on this cryptid I felt like I could go over his design in a lot of different ways, but an idea stuck out the most, which was a small, rabbit/hare like creature.

I started drawing random shapes and poses that would appeal to me and then tried to work on those that stand out.

These were the first sketches, I wanted to form an idea. Was I going to do an existing creature with some strange features? A complete amalgam of different creatures? Or perhaps just something resembling human characteristics to appeal to a creepier side?
What became clear for me was that I wanted something of a small size, somewhat cute features but also creepy on eerie ones.

By analysing the sketches and speaking to some of my friends and peers I realised the pose/shape on the top right corner of my initial sketches was the one I wanted to elaborate on. So I started doing so with refining, adding lines and figuring out the shapes I wanted.

I kept a lot of the initial sketch and just added some fur like characteristics and refined some of the muscles. I wanted to go with something somewhat slender. The face however was causing me so issues. I like the pointy ears and it broke the silhouette of the cryptid and made the shape for interesting and complex. So, I tried a rabbit like face, a mix of different animals and at the end I went with the approach of just mixing a complete different creature.

I then went over the drawing again but with more attention to the line art. I added details and created a new layer with the Multiply blend mode and a darker red colour to work as shadow.

With that out of the way I started playing with colour palettes. However, seeing that this cryptid would be able to camouflage I ended up accepting all colour palettes as the final ones.

These are all the final colour palettes with the shadow layer. Each of them has complementary colours so the design looks colourful and makes it stand out.

This is the final piece with all the layers (line art, colour and shadow layer).

And the last rendition was to showcase the camouflaging ability of the cryptid. To give this effect I hide the colour layer and leave only the shadow and line art. I added a background and distorted where the stripes would meet the figure.
